Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia with the Rhine-Ruhr region will host around 10,000 athletes and officials from 170 countries at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Word University Games from 16 to 27 July 2025.
The athletes compete in 18 sports over twelve days in Bochum, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr.
In addition to top sporting comparisons, the event will focus on science, sustainability and innovation as well as intercultural exchange.
The conceptual focus of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games is on social, ecological and economic sustainability as well as innovation and participation.
The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games are intended to serve as an incubator for change processes in sport and in the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Region. In addition, they are intended to generate long-term development impulses for society as a whole – especially through the intensive involvement of students. In addition, they should create a variety of opportunities for movement and encounters for the population and guests from all over the world.
The implementation concept for the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games has been successfully developed by the German University Sports Federation in intensive cooperation with the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia, the International University Sports Federation FISU as well as the municipalities of Bochum, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr, the adh member universities and other partners from organised sports and science.
PROPROJEKT Planungsmanagement & Projektberatung GmbH closely accompanied the two-year development process until the event was awarded in May 2021.
The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games are organized by the German University Sports Federation and hosted by the International University Sports Federation. The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games gGmbH, based in Düsseldorf, is responsible for the organization and implementation of the major sports event.
The aim of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games is to organise a sustainable and innovative major event oriented towards the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, which will provide important development impulses for all areas of German university sport, German sport as a whole and the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region.
Close conceptual integration with educational and scientific organisations, universities and colleges as well as the involvement of students will play an essential role.
Together with the partners of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games, a sustainability programme will be developed in which the ecological, economic and social goals of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games will be anchored.
The process of developing the sustainability programme shall be participatory and based on the guidelines of the United Nations, the European Union and the Federal Government. The following guidelines and agendas shall serve the sustainable orientation of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games:

- UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
- United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change: Paris Agreement
- UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games will combine top-class sport and science in a unique way. They offer a special opportunity to draw international attention to Germany, but also to NRW as a state of sport and North Rhine-Westphalia as a centre of science.
The FISU Games will not only address the participants, but also their universities in around 170 nations. This will create relationships and networks that begin before the event and last long after.
In doing so, they will make a significant contribution to the internationalisation of the universities. In addition, the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games will provide a unique opportunity to further develop the numerous facets of university sport at the adh member universities.
The academic programme that takes place before and during the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games is one of the core elements of the event. At its heart is the international and interdisciplinary exchange between universities, students and partners from politics and business.
An international science congress, the “FISU World Conference” forms the core of the academic programme.
In addition, scientific congresses and conferences on future topics such as mobility, digitalisation, inclusion or good governance are to be offered in close cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Science in North Rhine-Westphalia, the State Rectors’ Conference and the universities.
Specific formats for athletes, volunteers, media professionals or medical staff round off the educational offer.
The detailed design of the academic programme will take place in close coordination with the educational and scientific partners of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games as well as FISU.
The vision for the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games is to promote not only fair top-level sporting competition, but also intercultural exchange.
A special role will be played by the cultural programme, which will focus on the protagonists of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games – the students.
Young and modern cultural elements by predominantly local cultural practitioners are to fire the students’ imagination, embody the joie de vivre of the Rhine-Ruhr region and encourage active participation. As in many other areas, it is planned to involve the universities as well as the municipalities in the development of the programme. In order to make the FISU Games an experience for both participants and citizens throughout the region, cultural events will be offered in all main clusters.
The opening ceremony in the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf and the closing ceremony in the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord will be unforgettable highlights of the cultural programme of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games.
The opening ceremony of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games will take place in Düsseldorf in the Merkur Spiel Arena. Classic elements such as the marching-in of the nations or the lighting of the FISU Games fire will be combined with a colourful show programme that sets innovative accents and combines tradition and modernity under aspects of sustainability.
Since its opening in 2004, the Merkur Spiel Arena has been a popular meeting place and regular venue for national and international sports, music and cultural events.
The participants of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games will be at the centre of the closing ceremony. Numerous activities are planned in the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord to encourage direct participation and promote intercultural encounters between top student athletes, officials and guests. The closing ceremony will be complemented by the traditional closing ceremony in accordance with FISU protocol.
