1,000 days to Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games
Rhine-Ruhr. On October 20, exactly 1,000 days from now, Germany will host 10,000 athletes and officials from nearly 170 countries at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. From July 16 to 27, 2025, more than a whiff of the Olympics will waft through the five host cities of Bochum, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr during the major sports event, which will cover 18 sports.
Rhine-Ruhr 2025 celebrates the ‘1,000 Days to Go’ countdown by announcing its ‘Brand Purpose’ that will help the Local Organising Committee (LOC) strategise and execute the Games’ plans systematically and ensure a vibrant, athlete and community-driven, multi-sport event in a sustainable manner.
With the second largest multi-sports event in the world, the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community, the German University Sports Federation (adh) along with the five host cities and the LOC the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games gGmbH, want above all strong future
impulses in the areas of sports, science, culture and economy.
RHINE-RUHR 2025
The Rhine Ruhr Metropolitan Region will be the venue for the world’s largest sporting event in 2025. The FISU World University Games are the world’s largest multi-sport event after the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Germany and North Rhine-Westphalia, together with the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region, will host around 10,000 athletes and officials from up to 170 countries at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Word University Games from 16 to 27 July 2025. The athletes will compete in 18 sports over twelve days in Bochum, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr.
The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University will combine top-class sport and science in a unique way. They offer a special opportunity to draw international attention to Germany, but also especially to Sportland.NRW and the science location North Rhine-Westphalia.
In addition to top sporting comparisons, the event will focus on science, sustainability and innovation as well as intercultural exchange. A special focus is on innovation and participation.
The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games gGmbH was founded to organise the event. The application concept was successfully developed by the German University Sports Federation in close cooperation with the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia, the International University Sports Federation FISU, the municipalities of Bochum, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr, the adh member universities and other partners from organised sport and science.
SPORTS FACILITIES
The event concept provides for the use of a total of 21 sports facilities at established locations and at exhibition sites in Bochum, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr.
The already existing or temporary sports venues are located within a 25-kilometre radius and are connected by a dense public transport network, which enables a compact, modern and especially sustainable event concept.

SPORTS
The FISU World University Games are open to students aged 25 or under who are nominated by their national federations.
Participants include both young student athletes and established top athletes.
The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games will create a strong performance and promotion incentive for athletes and clubs in the region, especially in Germany.
