FISU World Conference 2025: Scientific exchange meets sporting excellence
The FISU World Conference will be a beacon for international scientific exchange in the field of sport. With topics such as sustainability, mental health, and innovation, the academic highlight of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games will be at the centre of a global debate on the future of sport and beyond. The University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr) will play a central role in this, contributing significantly to the organisation and implementation of the conference as part of the Academic Board.
“As an academic partner of the FISU World Conference, we are looking forward to discussing key topics such as sustainability and (mental) health,” emphasises a member of the UA Ruhr.
The UA Ruhr as a scientific engine
The UA Ruhr, consisting of Ruhr University Bochum (RUB), Dortmund University of Technology (TU Dortmund) and the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), is contributing extensive expertise as an academic partner. This partnership not only provides a platform for international exchange, but also strengthens the visibility of the Ruhr metropolitan region as a global centre of science.
For the UA Ruhr, the conference is more than just an event: it is a platform that promotes dialogue between academics, students and experts from all over the world. The impetus gained is channelled into research and teaching - from sports science and interdisciplinary projects, to topics such as sustainable event management.
International networks and local opportunities
The Ruhr metropolitan region benefits in two ways: scientific excellence is combined with regional strength. The UA Ruhr strengthens existing networks and initiates new collaborations - both within the scientific community and with external partners. This combination of local expertise and international perspective helps to position the region as an attractive location for education and science in the long term.
Programmes such as ‘Study at RUB/TU Dortmund/UDE’ receive additional impetus from the attention of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 Games. Students also benefit directly: internships, volunteering and project-based courses such as ‘Sustainable Event Management’ create practice-orientated learning opportunities and enrich their education.
Focus topics: Sustainability and mental health
Sustainability and mental health are two of the core pillars of the UA Ruhr initiatives, and also of the FISU World Conference. RUB's Sustainability Officer, Prof Dr Andreas Löschel, is driving forward projects such as ‘Green Campus 2030’, which promote sustainable solutions on campus and beyond. In the area of mental health, offers such as ‘Walk and Talk’ (RUB) or psychological student counselling (TU Dortmund University) are available to support students.
Another highlight is the interdisciplinary research centre ‘One Health’, which researches the connections between human, animal and ecological health and thus also addresses global challenges.
A boost for the region
The partnership between the UA Ruhr and the FISU World Conference not only contributes to scientific excellence, but also revitalises the cultural and economic transformation of the region. With its unique diversity and innovative strength, the Ruhr metropolitan region demonstrates how science, sport and culture can work together to initiate sustainable developments.
