"Our aim with the design competition was to craft a torch that not only serves as a symbol for the games but also encapsulates the values and essence of the Rhine-Ruhr region—especially sustainability, culture, and the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity,” he says.
“As such, we sought to foster active engagement from students and educational institutions."
The jury's dilemma: decision time
A distinguished jury comprising ten experts from various interest groups has been formed to select the best design. Alongside the organizing team, they include the German University Sports Federation, political representatives, and a team of respected artists.
They are placing significant emphasis on aesthetics, regional identity, and the practical usability of the Torch during the Flame Relay.
To identify the best entries, a matrix will be used to evaluate them against several criteria. These range from the Torch's role as an ambassador to sustainability, and from the cultural integration of the Rhine-Ruhr region to its successful fusion of tradition and modernity.
The selected torch will not only symbolize the FISU World University Games but also convey a sustainable and culturally resonant message that meets the high standards of a FISU World University Games Torch.
The grand unveiling: winner revealed on 30 April 2024
Following the jury's deliberations, a workshop will be conducted with the artistic team to further refine the design and develop the definitive version of the Torch. Special attention will be paid to technical feasibility to ensure a seamless production process.
The winner will be celebrated as the designer of the official Torch and also receive ten tickets to the Opening Ceremony of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games Summer. In addition, they will be presented with a surprise package from the official Rhine-Ruhr 2025 merchandise shop and an original Torch used in the Flame Relay.
The Flame Relay: beginning early 2025
The relay is an integral part of the FISU World University Games, symbolizing unity and camaraderie in the realm of sports, and uniting universities and students across the world.
The Flame Relay for the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games is slated to begin in early 2025. Details regarding the route and activities at each station will be unveiled in the fall of 2024.
