The Torch of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games combines tradition with transformation. It symbolises the history and evolution of the Rhine-Ruhr region, reflecting its unique connection between the past and the future. As a powerful emblem, the Torch embodies the region’s cultural heritage while shining a light on its innovative aspirations. The design incorporates characteristic elements of the region, telling the story of its journey from its mining, manufacturing and engineering roots, to a post-industrial, vibrant cultural landscape.

Just like the Rhine-Ruhr region, the Torch fuses fire with water, connecting the energy of an industrial past with the promise and renewal of the future.

‘We are delighted that we were able to support the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games in designing the torch with our scientific expertise on mining. We see the result as a powerful symbol that combines the proud history of the region with innovative developments of the present and future.’
Prof. Dr. Sunhild Kleingärtner (Scientific Director, German Mining Museum Bochum)
Passionately connected by fire and water

Torch designers
We organised a German-wide design compeition for the torch design at universities. We received numerous great designs. After a jury evaluated the designs, as luck would have it, two desigs tied for first place. The siblings Christian and Julia Stratmann shared first place with the designer Team Fabian Arnold and Victor Gorelik.
Both designs were well thought out down to the smallest detail and told a story. It was not possible to bring these stories together. And so we decided to develop the design further with the designer team of Fabian and Victor.
