3 June 2023 – Düsseldorf

Hello volunteers

On 3 June, the 4th Volunteer Fair took place at Corneliusplatz in Düsseldorf. Visitors were able to get an overview of the range of voluntary activities in the state capital from almost 90 associations, institutions and organisations. For the first time, representatives of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games were also on site.

Mirjam Scheffler (29) has been working as Senior Volunteers Manager since January 2023. Born in Olpe, Mirjam obtained a certificate in Event Management through a youth centre. While still at school, she competed in gymnastics and swimming at the regional level. After Mirjam took part in several sporting events herself as a volunteer (including the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, UEFA EURO 2020) and gained further relevant professional experience as a Volunteer Manager (including European Championships 2022 in Munich), she is now responsible for developing and implementing the concept of the Volunteer Program at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. This includes the review of applications, organization of interviews, allocation of roles and shifts, the coordination of training as well as supervision of the volunteers during the event.

Appreciation and gratitude for dedicated work

"Volunteer management has two basic tasks," explains the 29-year-old. "Organising a volunteer programme that makes it as easy as possible for the volunteer to give his/her time to the event and at the same time conveys to the volunteers that they are making a significant contribution to the success of the event and that this service is valued." The second task can be explained by the beautiful quote of Sherry Anderson - "Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless." - and that is to create an appreciation and gratitude for the dedicated work of the volunteers in the communities of all involved.
