Perfect dress rehearsal for the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games
The newly renovated Lohrheidestadion in Bochum-Wattenscheid will become a major international stage in summer 2025. Only a week before the athletics competitions of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games grace the venue, there will be a perfect dress rehearsal. From 11 to 13 July 2025, the German Athletics Federation (DLV) will stage the German Youth Championships (U20/U18) there – an ideal trial run for the world’s best student-athletes.
The awarding of the German Youth Championships marks the first national championships in the Lohrheidestadion following its extensive modernisation. “This is a great opportunity to test the new facility under real competition conditions,” explains Sina Diekmann, Chief Sports Officer of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games. “With the youth championships, we are ensuring that all processes are perfectly prepared for the international games.”
The city of Bochum is proud to be hosting the junior athletics elite. “The new stadium not only offers the best conditions for the athletes, but also an impressive backdrop for the spectators,” says Head of Sports Dietmar Dieckmann.
DLV Director Sven Schröder emphasises the importance of the event: "We are looking forward to hosting the U18/U20 German Championships at the new Sportpark Lohrheide next year. This is an outstanding highlight of the season for our young athletes. It is also the perfect preparation for the athletics competitions at the FISU Games."
Just one week after the final finish of the German Youth Championships, the first starting shot for the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games will be fired in the Lohrheidestadion, where the stadium will play a key role: 150 medals will be awarded here - an impressive première for the new sports venue.
