Re-Release of the Pre-Games Paper

One month after signing the Declaration of Principles on Human Rights and Sustainability, the Organising Committee (OC) has re-released its interim report on the measures being taken ahead of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games, which begin in just under six months’ time.

This second version of the Pre-Games Paper stands for transparency and at the same time invites active participation in the FISU Games - for sustainable development in and through sport.

Under the motto ‘Jointly, fairer, and more sustainable - the SDGs are all-in!’, the OC is calling for the creation of a trendsetting moment this summer when everyone comes together to experience the event in the best possible way.

“Since the first version of the Pre-Games Paper (released in September 2024), measures have been adapted and further refined to the final venue concept, while strategic human rights work has been significantly strengthened,” Helen Gampper, the OC’s senior manager for legacy and sustainability, says.

“This sustainability and human rights work has been developed in line with financial, personnel and time resources, and through dialogue with experts such as Prof. Dr Holger Preuß from Johannes Gutenberg University, who has been advising the OC on the whole topic. At the same time, various universities and students are expanding the sustainability performance of Rhine-Ruhr 2025 through relevant research and theses.”

Call for participation

Gampper says the current call for participation offers all interested parties and organisations the opportunity to use the event as a platform to “creatively implement or highlight” good practices in the field of sustainability and human rights.

“The aim is to learn together and accelerate social-ecological transformations,” she says.

Networking within and outside of sport also remains a focus. Rhine-Ruhr 2025 actively participates in various local events to promote dialogue and gather valuable feedback.

On the last weekend, Katrin Heyers (Senior Manager Science & Education, Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World Conference) contributed to the DOSB's New Year's reception and the expert talk on "sustainable major sporting events".

Gampper: “This ongoing dialogue brings new impetus to strategic planning in order to achieve the best possible results, which will be reported on after the FISU Games”.

The human rights work and the developed legacy and sustainability framework - most of which is already in the implementation phase - serve as a guide and inspiration.

“The task now is to successfully put the plans into practice - jointly with partners and all stakeholders,” Gampper continues. “Because if everyone is all-in, not only will the world's largest playing field be created this summer in Germany, but also a significant legacy for the region and beyond”.
