Sosna, Richter deliver men’s discus 1-2 for Germany

Sosna lead from the outset after opening with a throw of 63.65 metres, and his fifth-round mark of 64.26m left him clear of Richter’s best of 61.77m. Mykhailo Brudin (UKR) grabbed bronze with a season’s best of 60.71m.

The 1-2 result for the Germans was a reversal of the result from just last Friday when Richter defeated his teammate at the Bergen 2025 European Athletics U23 Championships.

“It’s a really nice experience,” Sosna said of winning his Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games gold medal. “I think competing in front of a home crowd gives you a completely different boost. The Germans delivered a great atmosphere today.

“At the end of the day, it’s obviously first and second that counts for Germany and we’re both really proud that we were able to bring that home.”

Richter was pleased to share the podium with his friend no matter what colour the medal.

“I’m definitely happy we were able to win two medals and that we finished first and second,” Richter said. “It’s great for the German team and the medal table.

“It’s actually great,” Richter said of their rivalry. “It would be boring if you always won everything or lost everything.

“It always gives you additional motivation.”

100m hype

In other medal events on Tuesday, Bayanda Walaza (RSA) lived up to the hype by clocking 10.16 seconds to win the men’s 100m, beating Puripol Boonson (THA) by 0.06s with Yanagita Hiroki (JPN) taking bronze.

Georgia Harris (AUS) took out the women’s 100m dash in 11.44 ahead of Magdalena Anita Stefanowizc (POL) and Gabriella Hailey Marie Marais (RSA), while Agate Souza’s (POR) best leap of 6.70m won her gold in the women’s long jump.

And Axelina Elin Signe Johansson (SWE) registered 18.45m to win the women’s shot put, more than a metre ahead of silver medallist Abria Deonna Celene Smith (USA).

Athletics action at Lohrheidestadion will continue on Wednesday, with the men’s and women’s 400m among five gold medals to be decided. Get your tickets here.
