With Deep Sympathy: Accident Involving Lorenzo Bonicelli at Rhine-Ruhr 2025
The Organising Committee (OC) of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games confirms the statement of the Italian University Sports Federation.
At the FISU Games on 23rd of July the Italian Gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli suffered a fall from the gymnastics apparatus during his competition. He was promptly attended at the venue, with medical professionals arriving shortly thereafter to provide clinical assessment and care. Lorenzo Bonicelli was transported to hospital by emergency ambulance where he was admitted and treated by hospital doctors and staff. At this time, the Organising Committee cannot comment on the extent of the injuries of Lorenzo Bonicelli out of respect for the privacy of Lorenzo Bonicelli and his family.
Following the accident, the Italian coaching team, in close coordination with the event organizers, withdrew from the remainder of the competition. This decision was met with full understanding and the utmost respect.
The OC thoughts are first and foremost with Lorenzo Bonicelli and his family during this difficult time. On behalf of the entire Rhine-Ruhr 2025 team, we send him our heartfelt wishes for recovery, strength, and hope.
We hope Lorenzo Bonicelli will soon be stable enough to return to Italy, where he can continue receiving the best possible care and be close to his loved ones. The Organising Committee is also in close connection with the Italian University Sports Federation to provide any assistance they require during this period.
