Playground

Experience the city through play. The Playground is a large play architecture and the central, city-connecting component of the City of Play. It travels through the Ruhr region and transforms the urban space into a playground. The public space becomes a place for encounters, play and art. Workshops, art activities, city games and an exhibition on ‘Play in Art’ invite you to join in - music, performances, kiosks and street furniture to linger.

The centrepiece of the Playground

The play architecture forms the centrepiece of the Playground and is many things in one: exhibition space, event venue, workshop, stage - and above all a place to play and create together. Designed by the orizzontale collective, it offers a walk-in façade, a roof terrace, workshops and spaces for exhibiting and experimenting. A colourful floor painting by the artist duo accentuates the space and brings it to life. Flexible play elements invite visitors to use the floor painting as a play area. Mobile and modular street furniture and artistic play options create a lively and interactive urban landscape around the play architecture.

An interactive exhibition tour in public space

The accompanying exhibition translates the overarching theme of sport into the idea of play - in and with public space. It refers to the social and transformative power of play: as an opportunity to meet others, to learn and to test one's own limits. The exhibition presents a variety of different artistic positions, including photographs, videos, installations, performances and urban interventions.

In terms of design and space, the exhibition develops from the Playground into the urban fabric and utilises its architecture. The result is an interactive exhibition tour in public space that takes visitors on a walk through the city - full of discoveries and opportunities to play along.

A multifaceted programme

The Playground in each city is complemented by a local and varied city-specific programme.
