Great joy: Flame relay reaches host city Mülheim an der Ruhr

The symbolic flame relay started at the NRW Sports School, Luisenschule, and was accompanied with great enthusiasm. Among the participants was Malik Bourakkadi, a badminton player from Mülheim, who has just been officially nominated for Team StuDi at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games. He is also one of the ambassadors of the Games, representing his sport with passion.

"To experience the FISU Games in my home region – and to be part of it – is something very special. I am thrilled to represent Mülheim and badminton on this stage," said Bourakkadi.

The torch brought the light of the Games to the city's Rathausmarkt, where the event continued with a festive programme. Mayor Marc Buchholz ceremoniously received the torch and was presented with the official Host City plaque for Mülheim an der Ruhr by Niklas Börger, CEO of Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games gGmbH, and Sina Diekmann, Chief Sports Officer of the Games.

Mayor Buchholz emphasized, "This torch not only brings the light of the Games to our city but also the message of fairness, international exchange, and youthful sporting enthusiasm. We are proud to be part of this grand and significant event."

Sina Diekmann praised the atmosphere: "Mülheim has impressively demonstrated today the passion, community spirit, and enthusiasm that exists in the region. The FISU Games are brought to life through such stages."

Mülheim's City Director and Sports Officer David A. Lüngen also participated in the flame relay: "The FISU World University Games are much more than a sports event – they represent unity, fairness, hospitality, and a unique communal sports occasion."

The programme at Rathausmarkt was diverse and captivating – music, dance, and show acts delighted the numerous citizens in attendance. A special highlight was the performance by Hip-Hop World Champion Stella Ritter, who enthralled the audience with her performance.

From there, the flame relay continued through the city – passing by the historic Schloss Broich – to the Hochschule Ruhr West (HRW), where the event concluded with an open get-together with students and guests. Prof. Dr. Susanne Staude, President of HRW, thanked all participants: "A great day for our university and the city. The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games combine international encounters with local commitment – and that's exactly what we need in these times."
