Update on Lorenzo Bonicelli: Back in Italy - Close to Family and Friends
After his serious fall at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU Games, Lorenzo Bonicelli has now returned home to Italy. The Italian gymnast fell during his dismount on the rings during his competition routine and received immediate medical attention at the scene. He was then rushed to the University Hospital in Essen, where he underwent emergency surgery and spent several days in a medically induced coma.
Fifteen days after the accident, Lorenzo was flown by air ambulance to Niguarda Hospital in Milan. He’s now being treated in the neurosurgery department of the ASST Grande Ospedale Metropolitano.
Being close to his family and friends is a huge source of strength for him and his loved ones. The medical care in Milan is first class, and Lorenzo continues to receive the best possible treatment.
His condition is stable, but it’s still too early to say how his recovery will progress.
We’re sending Lorenzo and everyone close to him our heartfelt support and best wishes for a strong and steady recovery.
