Essen Aglow – Unity, Excitement and the Official Launch of the Volunteer Journey

On 23 May, Essen set the stage for the spirit of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. Bursting with energy and excitement, pupils at Helmholtz Gymnasium kicked off the day with mascot Wanda before passing the torch on to students, lighting up the city all the way to the University of Duisburg-Essen campus. There, music, dance, and sport created a vibrant welcome.

From the campus, the torch continued along the "Ehrenamtsmeile" to Burgplatz, where it was ceremoniously handed to the Mayor – accompanied by the symbolic presentation of the Host City plaque.

The following day brought another powerful moment: the Volunteer Kick-off in the Grugahalle marked the official launch of the volunteer journey. Thousands of passionate volunteers were inspired and energised through talks, show acts, and a shared sense of purpose as they prepared to play their part in the FISU Games.
