Hämmerlingstraße 88, 12555 Berlin
Opened in 2009 at a cost of 8 million euros, the Ballsporthalle is a modern, three-court sports hall located at Wuhlheide in the eastern Berlin district of Köpenick. Located near the An der Alten Försterei football stadium of Bundesliga club 1. FC Union Berlin, the hall has 1,000 seats and is the main venue for the women's volleyball team of the Köpenicker Sportclub. The elongated building is divided into two horizontal layers. The single-storey solid base made of robust prefabricated exposed concrete is used exclusively by athletes, while the upper white plastered hall structure belongs to the spectators. Large-scale glazing on the front sides ensures a naturally light field of play. In contrast, the galleries receive indirect, glare-free light from above, which focuses all eyes on the sporting action below.
